College dropout rates in Mexico: Current situation and strategies to combat it at the National Technological Institute of Mexico

Abstract

College dropout is a very complex problem that has been present throughout the history of formal education, and higher education institutions (HEIs) are no exception. For this reason, the National Technological Institute of Mexico (TecNM) has implemented various strategies to address this situation.

This research is descriptive-documental and aims to present a general overview of the college dropout situation in Mexican HEIs. This is achieved through a search of information from various documentary sources, in order to obtain a general picture that allows us to establish the situation of the TecNM and the strategies implemented in the development of this work.

It should be noted that the results presented in this research correspond to strategies such as the Institutional Tutoring Program (PIT) and scholarships, and recently, the implementation of MOOCs and the Early Warning System, the latter of which seeks to identify the factors that lead students to drop out of their studies. With this, it can be determined that the strategies implemented by the TecNM focus on a complex situation, but one that is being worked on to address different areas.
