Mobile augmented reality as a virtual tour guide within a campus

With the constant advancement of technology worldwide, what was once considered science fiction has begun to become a reality, a clear example being Augmented Reality. Augmented Reality (AR) is a technological tool whose use is increasingly integrated into the fields of education, advertising, entertainment, and others [1]. Tourism, being one of the main sources of income for many cities and countries, has incorporated new technologies with mobile AR applications primarily as tourist guides. Therefore, this work presents the development of a mobile application (App) with AR as a tool that performs a virtual tour inside building 36 of the Technological Institute of Puebla and locates the classrooms, providing guiding information regarding their distribution thanks to the design of 3D models; in addition, it visualizes class schedules, assigned teachers, subjects, and enrolled students through a Smartphone or Tablet. With this, it is possible to easily locate students and teachers.
