Abstract

The Municipality of Santa María Yucuhiti, located in the Mixteca region of the state of Oaxaca in Mexico, has a population of 6,551 inhabitants and is classified as one of the municipalities with the highest poverty and social lag in Mexico. Paradoxically, it has natural and cultural attractions with tourist potential.

Tourism is one of the most important and fastest-growing sectors in the world that generates great expectations, but also important challenges in terms of technology to provide a service that is up to date, and it forces the strengthening of sustainable actions and commitments to environmental care.

Today, Information and Communication Technologies and the Internet have changed the way tourists interact with service providers, but also the possibilities that the tourism sector can offer its clients through the introduction of emerging technologies of Industry 4.0 such as: mobile technology, virtual reality, social networks, Big Data, geolocation, cloud storage, augmented reality and the Internet of Things.

This document presents the development process of a tourism web platform according to the UML-based Web Engineering (UWE) methodology, using Drupal, a content management system (CMS) due to its usability, robustness, modularity and security, and because it complies with the purposes of the semantic web. In addition, social networks such as YouTube and Facebook are configured to promote tourism in this Municipality.

Through this important technological strategy, Santa María Yucuhiti will be introduced to the world with the possibility of becoming a premier tourist destination, thus triggering economic development and social well-being for its inhabitants, along with a sense of responsibility, social, cultural, and ecological awareness in tourists.
