Impact of peer tutoring on the reduction of the failure rate of the differential calculus subject at the National Technology of Mexico Campus Juárez

The objective of this research is to show a pilot program of peer tutoring that would help to reduce the failure rate in the subject of Basic Sciences, specifically Differential Calculus. Its approach is longitudinal, descriptive, mixed. Data was collected through a survey, then a statistical analysis of the results was carried out. It was possible to show that the learning styles of the students, together with the activities designed for the pilot program of peer tutoring, benefited in the improvement of grades of the students. The learning styles test was applied to the Mechanical Engineering students who would act as tutor students and this test was also applied to the Industrial Engineering students who would be the tutored students, this in order to match their learning styles and create activities that would help to strengthen the topics of Differential Calculus and in this way the pilot program of peer tutoring could be worked on. The students' grades before the peer-to-peer tutorials and the grades after the program were analyzed. The results indicated that the peer tutoring pilot program had a positive effect, helping to reduce the failure rate of the subject. It is concluded that it is important to cover more Basic Science subjects that could present problems of high failure rates and thus help to reduce them.
