Abstract

The present research focuses on finding the optimal material mix to manufacture thermal bricks, considering local materials that would enhance the brick's properties. Through the Design of Experiments, the research identified the following materials for the mix: sand, kaolin, lime, gypsum, water, cement, titanium oxide, iron oxide, diatomite, and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC). The results showed that a mix with a high content of alfalfa as a local material, along with the aforementioned materials, provided a uniform and consistent mix with the best properties. A press was designed and built for brick manufacturing, and the bricks will be evaluated through compression tests, thermal resistivity, absorption, hardness, and efflorescence tests. It is expected that the obtained bricks will exhibit high compressive strength and low thermal conductivity. The conclusion was that the optimal mix of these materials allows the production of high-quality, low-cost thermal bricks, beneficial for the construction industry. However, a significant cost reduction per brick was not achieved without compromising essential properties.
