Abstract

-- In recent years, the generation of solid waste in the city of Chetumal has increased, posing major environmental challenges. Grocery stores, as part of residents’ daily lives, are perceived as relevant points for the generation and accumulation of waste—mainly plastic packaging, cardboard, glass, among others—produced both through direct sales to consumers and the restocking of merchandise. This situation is further aggravated by the lack of strategies in these stores to reduce, reuse, and recycle waste, highlighting the need to promote training programs, incentives, and policies that encourage the adoption of more sustainable models. Therefore, this study analyzes the possibility that grocery stores generate economic resources through waste management and the production of sustainable materials, while examining the attitudes and perceptions of local residents of the Caribe neighborhood in the city of Chetumal regarding this issue.
