Abstract

This project studied the adsorption of the dye Methylene Blue (MB) using bioadsorbents synthesized from cocoa post-harvest lignocellulosic wastes. During the postharvest processing of cocoa beans that include fermentation, drying and toasting of cacao beans, it is generated biomass wastes known as Cocoa Pod Husk (CPH). The objective of efficiently removing pollutant molecule MB from wastewater discharges from the textile industry, it is due to MB is very soluble in water, therefore, contaminated water containing MB will be dangerous for aquatic environments due to the interruption of photosynthesis, and its toxicity poses a challenge to ecosystems, human health and for all life beings. In order to improve adsorption capacity, we have used chemical treatments of solutions of NaOH and H2SO4 over the fresh biomass wastes and applying the treated materials in adsorption experiments evaluating the effects of type of treatment, temperature and pH. Obtained results showed, a 91% MB efficiency removal by applying alkaline materials while the acidic treated materials had a lower adsorption capacity of 42% removal in a contact time between the adsorbent and the adsorbate of 180 min.
