This article arises with the purpose of contributing to the goals of SDG 6 (Clean water and sanitation), of the 2030 Agenda established by the United Nations in 2015; where one of the goals is to improve the coverage of wastewater treatment and improve the quality of surface sources. It is here where artificial wetlands, which are an affordable technology, because they are low cost, easy to operate and maintain, become relevant. Made up of a shallow cell, filter material, vegetation, and microbial flora. Vegetation plays an important role within the wetland, since through its roots it absorbs water and nutrients from wastewater, contributing to the efficiency of treatment. Typical constructed wetlands use macrophyte vegetation from the region; although currently the use of ornamental vegetation is implemented, some studies reveal that these have removal characteristics and give aesthetic value to the place.
In this work, the efficiency of pothos (Epipremnum aureum) as ornamental vegetation in a pilot scale artificial wetland was studied. Starting with the construction of a pilot scale subsurface flow horizontal wetland which consists of a 2.40 x 1.10 x 0.50 m cell, using crushed and river gravel as a filter medium, the cell was divided into two parts (beginning and end), each of the parts with 20 plants (5x4). Height, stem, and number of leaves were measured; in the water, basic parameters were determined at the beginning and end.
Preliminary results indicate that there are no statistically significant differences in terms of vegetation development regardless of location. Regarding the basic parameters, if there is a significant difference for EC, SDT, and ORP.
