Chitosan-based films with potential use in biodegradable packaging applied to food were developed. Two types of films were obtained by modifying the chitosan solvent system, one using diluted acetic acid and the other using citric acid and a temperature of 80 °C. The characterization of the films indicates that they are translucent, flexible, with a moisture content of about 34%, with an apparent density close to 0.5 g/cm³.The thermomechanical analysis indicates a glass transition temperature between 20 and 60 °C and degradation inside the soil occurred in approximately 3 weeks.
An analysis of the economic feasibility of a chitosan-based packaging was carried out, finding a target population of potential consumers between 22 and 37 years of age, 95% of whom are ecologically aware and 80% of whom have recycling habits. Sixty percent of those surveyed are aware of biodegradable packaging alternatives and 90% are willing to purchase products that use biodegradable packaging, but only 58.5% have used these products occasionally and 24% use them frequently. The results indicate that chitosan-based films have physical characteristics and functional properties that make them attractive for use as packaging material and that consumers between 22 and 37 years of age are mostly aware of their benefits and are open to purchasing biodegradable packaging.
