Abstract

Sustainable disposal of industrial waste has become a global priority to reduce its environmental harm. In particular, the carpet industry generates a large amount of waste, although it is not fully verified worldwide, and only certain countries, such as the United States and the United Kingdom, have implemented measures to combat this problem. At best, this waste ends up in landfills, undergoing natural degradation, and the by-products produced are adequately treated. However, in most situations, it is dumped into the environment, contributing to environmental pollution of air, soil, and water and being a waste of resources. For the aforementioned reasons, options have been explored to revalue this waste, and the circular economy provides a sustainable response that reduces the effect on the environment and produces economic and social advantages. This paper investigates how the valorization of carpet waste can turn a problem into an opportunity, highlighting its relevance for sustainability. Some processes are analyzed to measure their circularity using established and globally accepted procedures, such as the Materials Circularity Index of the Hellen MacArthur Foundation and the Circular Economy Toolkit. Finally, an analysis is made of these processes' contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).
