Abstract

In this stage of the research work, the physical and mechanical properties of oyster shells (mollusk Crassostrea virginica) were evaluated with the objective of demonstrating their viability as fine aggregate to later be used as a partial replacement for sand in different proportions in mortar mixtures to ultimately manufacture blocks and pavers. The process was as follows:

Stage 1: The oyster shells will be washed with water.
Stage 2: The oyster shells will be crushed using manual tools (mallet and/or hammer).
Stage 3: The oyster shell will be ground using two manual mills.
Stage 4: The previously ground shells will be sifted using various sieves until it is decided which ones are suitable for separating the particles into fine and coarse grains.
Stage 5: Finally, the fine and coarse grains will be stored in containers.

The resulting granulometry was determined, and its corresponding granulometric curve was drawn. A similar procedure was followed with the commercial sand available in the region to compare both results. The statistical analysis was performed using software and three methods were employed, fixing the confidence level at 95% for the means in all cases. This allowed us to determine that the raw material of oyster shells is indeed viable for producing sustainable products that compete notably with those traditionally used.
