Abstract

The increase in the demand for water promotes the search for alternatives that allow optimizing its use. One strategy is the reuse of domestic wastewater in agriculture; for this reason, in the present work, the effect of six cleaning products on the germination and growth of the Melotria scabra seedling, a cucurbitaceous climbing plant that produces a small edible ovoid fruit, colloquially called "mouse watermelon", was evaluated. The acute toxicity technique was applied in seeds with 36 seeds per container, in triplicate analysis.

Under the concentrations evaluated, in the range of those recommended by the manufacturer, five cleaning products (dishwashing detergent and powder, bar soap, cleaner in use and anti-dandruff shampoo) produced a significant decrease in the response variables evaluated, germination, stem and root length as well as the weight of the seedling. The shampoo for normal hair did not cause an effect on the variables evaluated. The use of domestic wastewater for irrigation of this species is not recommended.
